24 Years after plans were brought before the Jersey City planning board, Liberty Harbor is finally ready to open according to property management. The small community that was once (20 years ago) promoted as a hyrbid of "Greenwich Village and the Upper West Side," will open its doors to residence beginning later this summer. A second phase of development is scheduled to begin next spring. Initial phasing allows for 700 units and 20,000 sq. ft. of retail space to open within a couple of months. 80 % of that space is already sold according to management. The second phase will make available over 1,000 more residential units, and up to 80,000 sq. ft. of retail space. While it has taken nearly 20 years to complete the first stage of the community (once designed to be 300 acres) developers say the remainder of the now-80-acre plan can be built within 15 years. "It's been excruciatingly long," he said. "There have been plenty of people who said it wouldn't happen, and it's happening." For those moving in, it may have been worth the wait. Restaurant space, health food stores, and nightlife are all planned to be part of the community. According to the Jersey Journal, "half of the first phase's housing units are rentals which will range in price from $1,500 to $3,000 per month, Zak said. The other half are condos ranging from $275,000 to $600,000, he said." See Jersey Journal Articles One and Two. |
